Privacy Policy

How your personal data is collected, used, and protected when you use this site.

Last updated: July 2026

Who we are

This website is run by Athena Nhan Ta ("we", "us", "our"), the author of The End of Seeking. For the purposes of UK data protection law, we are the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. You can contact us at hello@athenanhanta.com with any question about how your data is handled.

What we collect, and why

Contact form. If you use the contact form, we collect your name, email address, the topic you select, and your message. This is submitted via Web3Forms and forwarded to us by email so we can respond to you. We process this on the basis of legitimate interest — responding to enquiries you've chosen to send us.

Newsletter. If you subscribe, we collect your email address via Substack, who manage the mailing list and sending on our behalf. We process this on the basis of your consent, which you can withdraw at any time by unsubscribing.

Donations. Donations are handled entirely by Ko-fi. We do not receive or store your payment details, and we only see the information Ko-fi chooses to share with creators (typically a name or username and donation amount).

Book purchases. Concession-priced PDF purchases are handled entirely by Gumroad, and print/ebook purchases are handled by the relevant retailer (Amazon, Bookshop.org, Waterstones, Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books). We do not receive or store your payment details for any of these. Each platform is responsible for the data it collects during checkout — see their own privacy policies for details.

Free downloads. Our free sample downloads (introduction, meditation guide, etc.) require no email address or account, and no personal data is collected when you use them.

Who we share data with

We use a small number of third-party services to run this site, each of whom processes data under their own privacy policy:

  • Web3Forms — processes contact form submissions
  • Substack — manages our newsletter and mailing list
  • Ko-fi — processes donations
  • Gumroad — processes concession-priced PDF sales
  • Hostinger — our web hosting provider

Some of these providers are based outside the UK. Where that's the case, they are required to provide an adequate standard of data protection, for example through UK-approved standard contractual clauses.

Cookies and embedded content

This site does not itself use analytics or advertising cookies. However, some pages embed content from third parties — a Ko-fi donation panel and a Substack subscribe form — and these third parties may set their own cookies when their embedded content loads, under their own cookie policies. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which may involve a request to Google's servers when you visit the site.

How long we keep your data

Contact form messages and newsletter subscriptions are kept for as long as reasonably needed to respond to you or maintain the mailing list, or until you ask us to delete them. Donation and purchase records are retained by Ko-fi, Gumroad, and the relevant retailer according to their own retention policies.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:

  • Ask what personal data we hold about you, and get a copy of it
  • Ask us to correct inaccurate data
  • Ask us to delete your data
  • Object to or restrict how we use your data
  • Withdraw consent at any time (for example, by unsubscribing from the newsletter)
  • Ask for your data in a portable format

To exercise any of these rights, email hello@athenanhanta.com.

Data protection complaints

If you believe we've handled your personal data incorrectly, please contact us first at hello@athenanhanta.com with "Data Protection Complaint" in the subject line. We will acknowledge your complaint within 30 days and respond in full without undue delay.

If you're not satisfied with our response, you have the right to complain to the UK's data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), at ico.org.uk.

Children

This site is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last revised.
